Alternative Madness

2018-2023
After an extended hiatus I am back on the warpath.

The past several years have seen a tumultuous blend of highs and lows on the personal front. It culminated in getting married and experiencing the honour of my wife giving birth to my pride and joy, our remarkable savant of a son with the most angelic and uplifting disposition imaginable. While the marriage did not last, he has brought our lives new meaning and enriched our every day with his beautiful heart. I cut together these three videos highlighting the nicest parts of the journey:

Part One – A Love Story
Part Two – Alternative Madness
Part Three – Available exclusively to the innermost circle of the Dire Wolf Pack (as it features my incredible son)

I’m now focused on major projects so stay tuned to Dire Wolf Productions as we head into a banner era.

ANGELWOLF – The Astral Plane

2017, 63 minutes
The Astral Plane is the ferocious debut album by one-man metal band ANGELWOLF. Take a journey across the reaches of time, into the heart of a black hole, and beyond. Featuring a dramatic, melodic style and incredible lyrics (some based upon the poetry of his friend David Nicklin and inspired by his incredible bass-playing friend Marvin Lee), with beautiful album art that completes the ensemble, this unique record composed and performed by Alexander Renke builds to a brutal climax and will strike a chord in the hardest of metalhead’s hearts.

Singles were released for Spear and Guerrilla Love Song along with a music video for Elixir Fields. You can also download the inner lyric sheet here.

Dreams of Valhalla

2017, 18 minutes
A passionate tale of a conquered people daring to dream of better days, this short fantasy was rescued from the Renke vault where it was stored for over a decade. Shot in 2005 with limited means and talented friends but sadly buried due to mysterious circumstances, it was completely re-cut in 2017 as a silent film with new subtitled dialogue and timed to the ideal music of Kevin MacLeod, achieving an entirely different atmosphere and scope far superior to the original piece. Al is quite proud of this achievement and excited to finally share it with the world. You can view the whole thing here.

THE WEREWOLF VIKINGS TRIUMPHANT

2016, 35 minutes
Our hero ALEXANDER’s most emotional work, this tells the tale of a marvelous quest to achieve his heart’s greatest desire ~ a fantasy hockey dynasty. Based on the unbelievable true story, you can now relive first-hand all the twists and turns in the comfort of your living room (whilst experiencing an intimate sneak peak at his own eclectic interior decorating). In a rise and fall harkening to classical Greek tragedy, the Werewolf Vikings Triumphant is a true epic for the ages.

Behold the legend here.

Nincompoops

2014, 119 minutes
Three men. Boundless women. Insatiable libidos. Such is the recipe for disaster in this gripping social comment on the modern age. Featuring stalwart performances, unexpected usage of deli product, and hitherto impossible scientific achievements, this no-budget film will shatter your primitive conceptions of male to female relations. Watch as the shenanigans build to a truly unforgettable climax. Now that it’s finally released, Nincompoops is destined for cult classic status amongst the most discriminating of kino fans.

The trailer hints at the tale.

In Midnight Hours with Secrets & Sasquatch

2011, 43 minutes
An old-fashioned radio play, this charming murder mystery will keep you up to the wee hours of the night! When a mysterious summons brings several unusual characters together to a remote and imposing home in the thick of the forest, a host of riddles ensue. Follow the threads in this absorbing little tale.

The audio quality is unfortunately not the best, and due to various circumstances re-recording wasn’t possible, but hopefully the story and wonderful performances by the voice-actors make up for it! Wait till dark, set the lights low, pull over a blanket and get comfy… You can listen to the play in its entirety here.

Interstellar Romance

2007, 229 pages
The human race is on the brink of extinction. Moments before the coming holocaust a swath of riots erupt, the Army crumbles, the Empire’s last great hero deserts for love of his bride, and a knife-wielding maniac manages to get in the middle of all the mess.

So begins Interstellar Romance, the thunderous debut of a visionary author. Neo-Vikings roam the foul alleys of a staggering Cityship, crystal knights journey down twisted alien undergrounds, and spacejets cruise past the bright blue rings of Vantoria. Follow an unusual cast of call-girls and killers as they live their last desperate moments in a swirling sea of sex, violence, and salvation.

Fairytale City

2006, 5 minutes
Based on a story by classmate Melissa Di Natale, this unorthodox noir with a fairy tale twist inspired a dramatic imagining with several talented friends. Due to basic incompetence on my part, the footage was almost lost through the years but thankfully resurfaced in 2015 and was cut together into the short piece you can watch here.

Swords by Sunset

2005, 50 minutes
A mysterious knight rises from the grave to save a beautiful damsel in extreme distress. Faced with a plethora of vicious creatures and giant beasts, his doomed quest turns bloody at twilight. Haunting images fill this dark fantasy through deep dungeons and across spectacular landscapes… set to a thunderous soundtrack, Swords by Sunset is Al Renke’s powerful directorial debut.

My rather ambitious first major piece, Swords by Sunset was made possible with the talents of Abraham Armories, the Knights of the Northern Realm and some other good friends I coerced into taking part. The “special effects” were primitive, the non-traditional storyline and bizarre music may have been questionable choices, and the decision to work in a big kiss-scene for my character was definitely suspect, but for a zero-budget production and my first rodeo it holds a special place in my heart. Not available for the time being, but you can watch the trailer here.
